The National Anthem of the Philippines is titled Lupang Hinirang, which translates to “Chosen Land”. It was originally titled in Spanish as Marcha Nacional Filipina (Philippine National March) and is commonly and informally referred to as the Himno Nacional (National Anthem).
The lyrics of Lupang Hinirang were adapted from the Spanish poem Filipinas in 1899, written by José Palma. The music was composed by Julián Felipe.
The anthem was first performed on June 12, 1899, at the proclamation of Philippine independence from Spain. It was officially adopted as the national anthem of the Philippines in 1938.
